Notes from the English Education SIG meeting on 10 March:

Many thanks to everyone who turned out for the SIG meeting today.  I appreciate your willingness to discuss issues of English education and technology so early in the morning!

Following introductions and general discussion about current interests in English education and technology, several issues were discussed:

  1. A space for English language education at SITE.  Despite distinct differences, English (language arts) education and English language education (ESL/ENL/ELL) have often been combined in the English Education SIG at SITE.  After some discussion about the need for a separate space for English language education at SITE, Sylvie Huneault-Schultze of Fresno City College indicated her interest in establishing a SIG specific to English language education.
  2. Attendance of English educators, specifically, and teacher educators, in general.  After discussion of the interest in increased involvement of English educators in SITE, several suggestions were offered:
    1. More specific publicity at venues for English educators (such as NCTE, CEE and NWP) to put a face to SITE, stressing the later part of the conference as that devoted to teacher education.
    2. Offering a reduced fee structure to attend SITE for one-two days, as the cost of SITE is often prohibitive for those attending multiple conferences.
    3. Increased communication among English educators interested in/working with technology to support SITE submission and participation.

An additional topic of discussion was the interest in cross-content and interdisciplinary conversations exploring technology preparation and usage in the content areas.  Ideally, panels and symposia would be proposed for SITE that would allow teacher educators from multiple areas and/or experts in the content areas to discuss a specific issue in common.  Members of the SIG would enjoy making contact with others who are interested in such cross-content discussion and/or presentation.

Again, many thanks to the instructors, professors and graduate students who attended the SIG meeting this morning.  I encourage you to use this space or contact Carl Young or me to discuss the issues raised or propose new ones.

The English Education SIG will meet on Thursday, 10 March, at 7:45am for its annual SITE meeting.  We hope you will attend - even at such an early hour - to discuss  particular interests, potential activities and common goals related to the intersections of technology and English Language Arts.

Two items are on the agenda: (1) the place of ESL/ENL/language education in the English Education SIG and (2) involvement of ELA educators in SITE.  If there are other items of interest, please post them here and we will add them to our discussion.

The English Education SIG met Thursday morning, 1 April, at SITE. Two main issues were discussed by those in attendance.

1. Expansion of the English Education SIG to include ESL/ENL/language education. As English education incorporates issues of language and literacy, there was some support for the incorporation of ESL/ENL/language education into the SIG. This would also provide a home for those specifically focused on language issues at SITE. There was concern, however, over the conflation of the two areas. English education and ESL/ENL/language education are distinct areas of research and teaching, with specialized issues and foci. The SIG members discussed the possible creation of a separate SIG for those working with language and technology rather than expanding the English Education SIG to include a new area.

2. Bringing English educators to SITE. The SIG members also discussed increasing English educators' involvement in SITE. Possible conflicts were offered: attendance at IRA and AERA, a perception of SITE as IT-focused rather than content-focused, lack of awareness. The SIG would like to increase attendance at SITE and discussed potential ways to attract English educators, as well as teacher leaders, working with technology. Suggestions offered: publicize at IRA, connect with the CEE Commission on Technology and Teacher Education.

If there are others issues people would like to bring to the SIG's attention, feel free to contact me as the new chair of the English Education SIG!
